Meet Happiness and Joy: From Refugees, to Scholarship students, to Servant Leaders

Two sisters, Happiness and Joy, are both Daystar scholarship students and refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Happiness and Joy have six other siblings, two others who attend Daystar. Their parents serve in full-time ministry with their father as a faithful pastor. At an early age, they fled their homeland because of war and were living in Burundi for several years as refugees before they fled to Kenya because of political instability.

Happiness shared some of her experience at Daystar following her graduation in December: “My time at Daystar University was an adventure and an amazing time. I saw God’s love being portrayed in my studies, in my fellow students as well as teachers. I really enjoyed my classes as I could see myself helping more children and refugee girls who have been going through hard times and giving them the hope of living which is Jesus Christ. At Daystar, I learned a lot of important values, but the value that stood out most was Servant Leadership. We are alive for each other; that is to change someone else’s life and impact them in a positive way.” “May you keep being a blessing to others and changing lives as you have changed mine.”

Meet Masango: Bringing Servant Leadership to Many Needs in Zimbabwe

Masango Matimura, a 2006 graduate of Daystar University, is now serving as Executive Director of Holistic Peace and Development Zimbabwe (HPDZ). Masango recently visited the Daystar U.S. offices and shared more of his story and the appreciation he has for Daystar University and the opportunity he received as a Daystar University scholarship student.

Masango shared, “As an alumnus of Daystar University, Kenya, I take pleasure in connecting with Daystar U.S. My pursuit of university education was incomplete without the role Daystar U.S. played. I got financially stuck with the possibility for being sent back to Zimbabwe together with my wife Patience and daughter Munashe. When my name was eventually included on the Daystar U.S. sponsored list, I felt like a huge mountain was rolled away from my shoulders and heart. I studied a double major BA in Community Development/ Biblical and Religious Studies. My aim was to seek an understanding of the causes and cures for poverty. I promote Biblical holistic thinking, reconciliation, governance, and economic development in Zimbabwe. I learned the value of service."

How can you pray for Masango and his family?

  1. Please pray for my wife Patience and her entrepreneurship training with the US Embassy (Academy for Women Entrepreneurship)

  2. Please pray for me to find rest amidst the very busy schedule he leads. To find a healthy balance of professional work and family.

  3. Pray for wisdom in choosing, planning and implementing development and entrepreneurial ideas as proposed.

  4. Pray for wisdom as I take steps concerning my future relationship with my denomination

  5. Please pray for our girls as they go to school to learn and grow according to His Grace.
